Every child can learn to draw and paint

“As soon as he is able to keep it himself, a nature-diary is a source of delight to a child. Every day’s walk gives him something to enter.”

Charlotte Mason

Give them the tools and they will surprise you with their creativity.

Why nature journal?

Children should be trained to see.

Charlotte Mason recommended allowing children absolute freedom to run, shout and express themselves with energy while outdoors. Yet she also believed children should be trained to “see.” To have their eyes opened to the natural beauty around them, “igniting in them the curiosity to look, notice and observe.”

Charlotte Mason encouraged her students to keep a nature notebook as soon as they were able. Spending ample time in nature each day, the children would create their own living book of life outdoors.

Nature journaling utilizes art, science, and language arts to increase a child’s enjoyment of nature and train his powers of observation. The sky’s the limit for what they can include in their nature journal. I have lots of ideas on my blog post How to Make Nature Study Awesome, and more in 7 Ways to Make Nature Study More Meaningful.

Let them once get in touch with nature and a habit is formed which will be a source of delight through life.

Your Questions

Answered Here

How thick are the pages?

300 lb cold-pressed mixed media paper, acid-free. Heavy enough that watercolor sits on the surface without bleeding through to the next page, so both sides of every sheet are usable.

How big is the journal?

8.5 inches wide by 5.5 inches tall, opening to a long horizontal spread. It slips into the daypack and lies flat while your child paints, held open by the elastic strap.

Which watercolor palette comes in the bundle?

One of our nature sets: Essential, Landscape or Forest. All three carry the same range of nature colors, so whichever arrives will do everything an outdoor study needs. Autumn and Floral are sold separately.

What age is this for?

Four to a hundred and four. The pencils suit every one of those ages, and the triangular grip gives steadier control for field work, which matters as much to an adult sketching a wildflower as to a four-year-old. Mothers and fathers should keep a journal of their own alongside their children.

How does the whistle work?

A solid brass whistle rides on a short coil keychain clipped right to the daypack, always within reach if a child wanders happily ahead of the group. Save it for those moments and the birds and beetles stay right where your child can watch them.
