In 1934, the American Historical Society declared that the age of individualism was closing and collectivism emerging, and that schools should prepare children for it. From the schoolbooks, they removed the narratives that promoted individual liberty, self-government, and the stories of American heroes. Truth was replaced with an agenda for social reform. After renaming history social studies, industrialists implemented an educational model that purposefully extinguished an interest in and a love for learning.
